Millennial Housewarming Dilemma?…My Top Pick for Any Budget!

It can be hard figuring out what to get and where to shop when you’re invited to a housewarming party, especially for the millennial apartment dweller in your life. Personally, I cannot tell you how many well-intentioned gifts we have donated, damaged, or just neglected because they don’t fit into our one-bedroom life! But no need to fear; I’ve got your back.

New York is full of amazing places to suit any style, and though I’ve shared my love of thrift shops many times, I believe that some gifts are worth the investment in something new and exciting, so when I am invited to a housewarming for someone around my age I always turn to one of my personal favorite home design shops…

I often refer to CB2 as Crate and Barrel’s cool younger sister. It is eclectic, trendy, artful, and colorful. It also sells products that are on point for younger folks, especially city-dwellers who want high impact in limited space. So, when our good friends Gavin & Emily moved into their first apartment (sans roommates) I knew just where to go! The CB2 on Broadway in SoHo is my personal favorite - it’s near the Q train and the SoHo Prada store - so it’s essentially perfect for early morning inspiration hunting and making a quick retreat back home early in the afternoon on Saturday while the rest of the city is just waking up.

What makes CB2 great for these occasions?

  1. There’s something for almost everyone - I don’t get too hung up on brands, and it may seem like a contradiction to say that while singing the praises of a particular retailer, but CB2 has a consistently fun and chic aesthetic, mixing classical elements with modern finishings and colors - making it more about style than brand.

  2. The prices are reasonable - there are a lot of beautiful places to shop in the city, and I’ve been to many of them, but CB2 is one of the more budget-friendly sources for inspired home decor and their style is pretty durable, so the investment will last.

  3. They understands apartment living - now, this point is waaaaaay more relevant for some things (sofas) than others (bed linens), but I know that when I buy something from CB2, it will be thoughtfully designed to be as beautiful and useful as possible in a limited space.

There’s always a lot to look at, but our eyes quickly rested on the Promenade Serving Platter - a beautifully glazed square serving dish with gold metallic details. It looks young and cool but still mature and sophisticated - sounds like a perfect millennial housewarming to me! Of course, I couldn’t resist getting some flowers from our friends at Les’ Blooms Floral to fit the restrained color palette - whites and cool greens in lisianthus, delphinium, and even some cool cabbage! The satin ribbon they tied them up with even made a beautiful contrast with Gavin’s floral shirt.

The dish was a real hit (of course) and we can’t wait to see it in action at their next get-together!
